School’s Out for Summer (or is it?): Transformation at CHA

Summer Camp Activities at CHAEveryone loves a fresh start, and those in the school world are fortunate to get one every year. Last week our campus was all hustle and bustle, with parties, ceremonies, celebrations, final classes, and fond “goodbyes”. Finally, the long, frenzied sprint of May and early June was finished.
This week, CHA, while certainly not closed nor empty, is transformed. Rooms have been cleared and display cases emptied, and, except for an occasional music student, there are no students in the halls. Carpets are being shampooed, the driveway is being repaved, and even the big industrial refrigerator in the kitchen is getting a thorough clean-out and scrubbing! Maintenance and housekeeping crews are busy on strategically deferred project. A stroll down the halls reveals various teachers and administrators, cleaning up, cleaning out, and just plain cleaning – if our beloved PreK teacher hand wiping every toy with Clorox is not a metaphor for a new start, I don’t know what is!
Though these cold, grey and rainy days might make you doubt it, summer is here, evidenced by the slower pace here at school. Not lazy, mind you, just (a little) slower – dare I say saner? But walk a little further down the halls towards the Field house and fields and you might be fooled as to whether summer is indeed here. Area administrators are taking advantage of both the summer pace and our new facilities, holding professional development sessions in our fabulous meeting rooms. And our camp season is already in full swing with basketball, squash, swimming, and soccer and tennis camps this week (and that’s just the start!). One meeting attendee was confused, stating that the clamor sounded just like a height-of-the-season high-stakes game!
Summer camp leads me to my next question – Where in the world is Larry Hyde?
